The Contaminant
Created by Sarah Foster and Christian Serrano-Goden

A little bit of history...

The Contaminant was first performed as a work in progress at the Amalgamate Artist Series 9 on November 16, 2013 and later developed and performance at the Boston University Dance Showcase and later performed at Dixon Place and later performed at The Dance Complex in 2016.

Here’s how it was made:

We took the last 4 words of the 2nd to last sentence in the 1st paragraph of a section in two Foreign Affairs pieces on Synthetic Biology - Biology's Brave New World and Keeping Science in the Right Hands, and then put them side by side.

That process created this poem, which served as the inspiration for this piece:

More sophisticated creature / of information and intelligence
Of “life circuit boards” / at its most basic level
By the H5N1 experiments / into weapons of mass destruction
By 12% annually / improving response capabilities and methodologies
To a 3-D printer / in this equation
For security reasons / in this equation
To move abroad / in this equation
More boon than bane / for the good of all

*Formula created in collaboration with Kathryn Allawala, Foreign Affairs
