I returned to New York this week, after an unexpected (much appreciated) extended stay in St. Thomas this week, due to the snow storm on the East coast on Tuesday. My investigations this week are a combination of St. Thomas and New York.
Before leaving, I asked a co-worker what sort of video I should make - and she said "An unexpected thing in an expected place - nothing that's makes me think of an island! No beaches and no palm trees!" I set out on the task, thinking of basements, dark alleyways, and construction sites as potential film spots. So when my friends and I were stranded on St. John (the last car-ferry of the day had broken down and we were stuck waiting at the dock, trying to figure out what to do, where to stay, how to get back, etc.), I thought - well, let's make a dance film!
The video below is footage shot at the dock on St. John. The soundtrack was recorded and created when I got back to New York. (I asked a couple of my co-workers to come to my desk and read whatever words they wanted from the latest issue of Foreign Affairs. Then, I mixed it all together on my subway commute.)
What I like about it: the fact that every component part was collected at random with no purpose whatsoever, the fact that it has no purpose (but sort of almost could), and how much fun it is to make music on my iPad while on the subway.
p.s. The photo is one of my favorites from the trip. The simplicity of the gray wire cuts through the chaos of the black staples, and then, a simple number.
